How to write a maid of honor speech that does her justice

You know her better than almost anyone in the room — which is exactly why this feels hard. The trick is to stop trying to say everything. Pick the story that shows who she is, say one true thing about her and her partner, and raise a glass.

How long should it be?

Three to five minutes is the sweet spot — about 400 to 650 words. If there are several speeches, err on the shorter side; the couple will thank you.

A simple structure

  1. Open warmly. Thank the hosts briefly and introduce yourself — sister, best friend since kindergarten, college roommate.
  2. Tell the story. One memory that captures her: the road trip, the terrible first apartment, the time she talked you out of a bad decision.
  3. Say what makes her her. Loyal? Fearless? The person who remembers everyone's birthday? Connect it to the story.
  4. Bring in the partner. How you knew this was the one — the moment you saw how they treat her, or how she talked about them.
  5. Toast the couple. End on both names and a wish for their future.

Common mistakes

  • Turning it into a speech about your friendship rather than about her and the couple.
  • Inside jokes from a group chat that nobody else understands.
  • Reading a long poem or quote instead of saying something in your own words.
  • Forgetting to mention the partner until the very last line.

If you're nervous about crying

You probably will a little, and that's fine — the room is on your side. Put a natural pause in the script right before the emotional part, take a breath, and keep going. Practise the last paragraph the most.

Example opening

Hi everyone, I'm Jess. Sarah and I met on the first day of college, when she knocked on my door holding two cups of tea and said, "I've decided we're going to be friends." She wasn't wrong. She rarely is.

Sarah is the person who decides things and then makes them happen. So when she told me, three dates in, that she'd met the man she was going to marry, I didn't argue. I just asked what he was like…

Frequently asked questions

Is it maid of honor or matron of honor?

Traditionally a matron of honor is married. In practice, use whatever the bride calls you.

Should I write the speech with the other bridesmaids?

You can gather stories from them, but one voice delivering it works better than a group speech.

Can I give the speech with the best man?

Joint speeches can work well if they're rehearsed together. Keep it short and split the stories evenly.
