How to write a best man speech people will actually remember
You've been asked because the groom trusts you. The good news: a great best man speech isn't about being a comedian. It's about telling one or two true stories well, saying something sincere about the couple, and getting off the stage before anyone checks their phone.
How long should a best man speech be?
Aim for 3 to 5 minutes — roughly 450 to 650 words when spoken at a relaxed pace. Under three minutes can feel like you didn't try; over six and you'll lose the room, especially if you're after dinner and the bar is open.
The five-part structure that works
- The opening line. One sentence that earns attention. A light observation about the day or about yourself works better than a joke you found online.
- Who you are. Ten seconds: how you know the groom and for how long. Skip "for those who don't know me" — just say it.
- The story. One well-told story that shows who the groom really is — loyal, ridiculous, generous, stubborn. Specific details (the place, the car, the exact thing he said) make it land.
- The turn. Move from the groom to the couple. What changed when he met his partner? What do you see when they're together? This is where the room goes quiet.
- The toast. Ask everyone to stand or raise a glass, and finish with their names.
What to leave out
- Exes, ever. Not even as a joke.
- Stories that need "you had to be there" to make sense.
- Anything that would embarrass the couple in front of their grandparents or their boss.
- Long lists of inside jokes. If fewer than half the room gets it, cut it.
- Drinking stories that make the groom look like a liability.
Tips for delivering it
- Print it in a large font, or put it on cards. Reading from a phone looks like you're checking messages.
- Practise out loud at least three times. You'll find the sentences that trip you up.
- Pause after the funny lines. People need a second to laugh.
- Have one drink before, not four.
Example opening
Good evening, everyone. I'm Dan — I've known Marcus since we were eleven, which means I've seen every haircut he's ever regretted.
When people ask me what Marcus is like, I tell them about the night my car broke down two hundred miles from home. I called him at one in the morning. He didn't ask why. He just said, "Send me your location," and four hours later he pulled up with coffee and a tow rope he had no idea how to use.
That's Marcus. He shows up. And the first time I saw him with Priya, I realised he'd finally found someone who shows up for him too…

Write my speechFrequently asked questions
Should a best man speech be funny?
Funny helps, but sincere matters more. A few genuine laughs and one heartfelt moment beat ten jokes every time.
Can I mention the groom's past relationships?
No. It's the single most common way best man speeches go wrong.
When does the best man speak?
Traditionally after the father of the bride and the groom, but many couples now choose their own order. Ask them.
